Principal Joyce’s Message
Washington & Jefferson Elementary School has served the Altoona community since 1973. Our school is composed of a wide range of backgrounds, talents, learning styles, and abilities. Washington & Jefferson Elementary is proud of our reputation as a warm and inviting school climate. Students of all backgrounds are taught how to become successful students.
Our Vision at W&J is to promote academic and social success for the “whole child.” As a school community, we work together to meet the diverse needs of our learners, and to produce well-rounded life-long learners.
Technology is integrated into the curriculum through the use of computer labs, portable computers on carts, and every classroom is equipped with Promethean boards, activslates, and activates. These tools enhance our students’ opportunities to become skilled at using technology to assist in their learning.
Our school’s mission is to provide a safe, nurturing, and caring learning environment that embraces the academic challenges set by the Pennsylvania State Standards and Assessments. Through integration of technology, commitment to the written curriculum, differentiated instruction, Response to Intervention, and establishing a partnership with families and community members. We strive to develop each of our student’s talents so that they grow into successful contributing members of our society.
Washington & Jefferson Elementary School Pledge:
I pledge today to do my best… in reading, math and all the rest. I promise to obey the rules… in my class and in the school. I’ll respect myself, and others, too. I’ll expect the best in all I do. I am here to learn all I can, to try my best and be all I can.
We strive everyday to make W&J Elementary a place where students look forward to coming and a place they hate to leave. Our children’s education is achieved through the efforts of a TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More) consisting of students, teachers, parents, staff members, and community members. Together we work to provide the very best for our students.
All children are born with a powerful desire to learn. Everything we do as parents and as teachers must ensure that this powerful desire is kept alive.
Washington & Jefferson Elementary School is truly a community of learners where we develop this desire and love of learning.
